Frequently asked questions
Decoupling is the process of physically separating a speaker from a surface (like a floor or shelf). Subwoofers produce powerful low-frequency vibrations that can cause nearby objects to rattle and the floor to vibrate. An Auralex isolation riser (like the SubDude) "floats" the sub, resulting in a much cleaner, tighter bass response and less noise transmission to other rooms.
No. Soundproofing (isolation) is about keeping sound from entering or leaving the room (using mass and airtight construction). Acoustic treatment (absorption/diffusion) is about improving the sound quality inside the room. Auralex provides products for both, but most home theater enthusiasts focus on treatment to improve the listening experience.
While you can paint it, we generally advise against it. Standard latex or oil-based paints will clog the open-cell structure of the foam, causing it to reflect sound instead of absorbing it. If aesthetics are a concern, we recommend the Auralex ProPanels, which come in a wide variety of high-quality fabric colors.
